Privacy Policy
Last updated October 23, 2026
The short version
- You can use the checklist without an account. Your list then stays on your device.
- If you create an account, we store what you need for it to work: your email, your checklist, and any visits, notes, and photos you add.
- Your visits, notes, and photos are private. Only your name, username, and checked-off parks are public, and only if you turn on your public profile.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use tracking or analytics tools.
- You can delete your account and everything in it from the app at any time.
This policy explains how Coast Software Development ("we", "us") handles information in the National Parks Checklist app (the "app") and on npchecklist.com (the "site").
Information we collect
Without an account
The parks you check off are stored only on your device. The app downloads the list of parks from our server, and like any web server, ours briefly logs basic request details such as your IP address and device type to keep the service running and secure.
When you create an account
- Account details: your email address and, if you provide them, your name and a username. If you set a password, we store only a secure hash of it, never the password itself.
- Sign in with Apple or Google: if you use one, we receive an account identifier from Apple or Google and the email address (and, the first time, the name) you choose to share. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we receive a private relay address instead of your real one.
- Sign-in codes: when you ask for a code, we email it to you. It expires after a few minutes.
- Your checklist: the parks you've checked off, so they sync across your devices.
Premium features
- Visits: the dates you visited a park and any notes you write.
- Photos: photos you add to your visits. The app resizes them before uploading. Photos can carry details your device adds, such as when and where they were taken, so only add photos you're comfortable storing with us.
- Subscription status: purchases are made through Apple, so we never see your payment details. Our subscription provider tells us whether your subscription is active and when it ends.
Permissions on your device
The app asks for access to your photo library or camera only when you choose to add a photo, and uses that access only for the photos you pick or take. The app does not access your location.
How we use your information
- To provide the app: signing you in, syncing your checklist, and storing your visits and photos.
- To show your public profile and let friends compare lists, if you turn sharing on.
- To unlock Premium features while your subscription is active.
- To send the emails you request, such as sign-in codes. We don't send marketing email.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse, for example by limiting repeated sign-in attempts.
Your public profile
Sharing is off unless you turn it on. When your public profile is on, anyone with your link, or who searches for your username in the app, can see your name (if you added one), your username, and which parks you've checked off. Your email, visits, notes, and photos are never shown. Turning the profile off hides it right away.
Who we share information with
We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't share it with advertisers. We share it only with:
- Service providers that run parts of the service for us: hosting our servers, storing photos (Amazon Web Services), delivering email, and managing subscriptions (RevenueCat). They may use the information only to provide those services to us.
- Apple and Google, when you choose to sign in with them, under their own privacy policies.
- Legal authorities, if we're required to by law, or to protect the rights and safety of our users or others.
The map in the app is provided by Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android, which load map images from those companies.
How long we keep it
We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. When you delete a photo, visit, or your account, we delete it from our systems. Copies in routine backups are removed as those backups expire. Server logs are kept only for a short time.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account: in the app, go to Account › Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, checklist, visits, and photos. If you subscribe, cancel the subscription in your App Store settings too.
- Edit or remove information: you can change your checklist, visits, notes, photos, name, username, and sharing setting in the app at any time.
- Access or other requests: depending on where you live, you may have the right to request a copy of your data or ask us to correct or delete it. Contact us at austin@coastsoftwaredevelopment.com and we'll respond within 30 days.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit, photos are stored privately and shown only through short-lived links, and your sign-in token is kept in your device's secure storage. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and limit who can access it.
Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we'll let you know in the app.
